Community Health

 

The Schieffelin Institute of Health – Research & Leprosy Centre (formerly known as S.L.R. & T.C.) at Karigiri was established in 20th June 1955.

In 1962 a Leprosy Control Project was organized in Gudiyatham Taluk, a geographically defined revenue administrative unit, in Vellore District of Tamil Nadu, in India. It comprises an area of about 1,306 Sq.Kms. having approximately 950 villages and hamlets. The population of the area is 821452 (2010 Est.). This constituted the nucleus of the Branch of Epidemiology and Leprosy Control. Since then 26,434 (April 2010) leprosy cases have been registered for treatment within our control area. All the data on these patients have been computerized. The main activities are as follows
